Happy Easter! In the Christian tradition the forty days of Lent are officially over. Christ’s Resurrection opens the path to eternal life. While having coffee and reading the newspaper this morning, menus that were prepared with love, gratitude and joy are intended to awaken our five senses as family and friends gather around the Easter celebratory table.
Savor every single moment of it today and make this the day you put social media and smart phones away. Give your full attention to the life around you. Your complete attention is better than anything the Easter Bunny might have left in your kids’ basket. If you’re not convinced it would make a difference, you’re kidding yourself. Hey, I’m just as guilty as the next person. A week ago my husband and I attended the Great Steak Cook-off for the first time. As we were walking up to turn over our tickets, I realized I’d forgotten my phone. Gasp! How could that have happened? What was I thinking? Considering that we live in Matagorda, it wasn’t just a matter of running back to the house to retrieve it. For the next four hours I managed without it. Good friends and great food surrounded me. (I’m reliving the memory of mouth-watering crawfish bisque and the grilled bacon wrapped jalapeños); however, from time to time, I reached in my purse to check my phone and was reminded of the obvious. It was an ‘Ah Ha’ moment for me. When I returned home I had three non-emergency texts. That’s it! Nobel laureate Herbert Simon put it this way: A wealth of information creates a poverty of attention. The information we are bombarded with consumes our attention alienating us from the human connection we’ve begun to take for granted.
Choose life today, celebrate it, embrace it, and wrap your arms around it. Hug your kids, your spouse, your parents and tell them how Blessed you feel to have them in your life. If someone special can’t be with you today, give them a call this morning right after you finish having your coffee and reading the newspaper, before all the activities begin. Don’t forget to check your Easter basket!
